Oilseeds Association

Strengthening the Oilseeds Association

The Oilseeds sector in Tanzania is one of the five most important export sectors in Tanzania but in addition is a highly important processed and needed food crop in Tanzania. It is used throughout for cooking and is one of the sectors in which the Tanzanian economy can be strengthened easily more by increasing its capacity. But therefore the sector needs to be organised in a more efficient manner. But this can only be done if the required data on oilseeds in Tanzania is there. Although the ministry of Agriculture and the bureau of statistics do have data, this data is often outdated or incorrect. In a first meeting of the Tanzanian Edible Oilseed Association (TEOSA) in July 2009, it has been mentioned and advised that a proper baseline study should be conducted in order to further develop its strategy and policies. This study will be ready by the end of 2010 and undertaken by Enock Stanley Ugulumu.

TEOSA is a member based association of edible oil seed actors in Tanzania. The association formed as a result of two successive multi stakeholder meetings that was conducted and facilitated by SNV and Round Table Africa. The Association was formed in 2009 following the request by the local edible oil seed actors who were looking for means and ways to establish an industry voice.
