Potato Round Table in Nairobi (Kenya) on May 8, 2009
Upgrading the Potato Value Chain in Nairobi
Organized by Joseph Wang’ombe
This Round Table addressed marketing and value addition. The experts compared the global potato value chain with a local one and found that the local potato value chain was highly underdeveloped. Moreover, production had stagnated over the last 10 years. Presentations from the Ministry of Agriculture, the potato farmers association, processors and donors (GTZ) were delivered after which there were group discussions on three main themes of the Round Table:
Especially the first and the third theme have been earmarked as priority areas for Round Table Africa (RTA). The linking of farmers to processors has been established and a project for the strengthening of the farmers association has been developed.
Based on this Round Table an RTA Project for Improving the Potato Value Chain in Kenya has been started.
