Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) Program

The Doctor of Administration (DBA) program of RTA permits participants to master concepts and research skills directly relevant to management. A prominent distinctive feature of the DBA research is that it tends towards an applied-research orientation and, as such, it draws more on practical business administration issues and the problems of industry. The DBA stresses interdisciplinary understanding and application of the knowledge, which is most relevant for managing in a global perspective.

The program consists of two stages. In the first year the focus is on coursework, and development and elaboration of the initial research proposal. A successful defense of the proposal (based on a thorough review of literature) will lead to the MPhil degree. The actual research (data collection and analysis) will start on parallel.

The topics of the RTA DBA program focus on competitiveness at regional, national, industry or company levels, economic development issues, and governance issues (including corporate social responsibility). Studies should be comparative in nature, normally by investigating specific industries within selected East-African countries, but benchmarking to countries outside the region is an option. The selected industries are extractive industries, traditional industries (e.g. agriculture), manufacturing industries, service industries (including tourism). A range of examples of projects and research ideas is listed in the DBA framework document.
